It’s Time to Legalise Cannabis in SA.

The war on drugs – really a war on people – has failed. Governments around the world are moving towards legalising and regulating cannabis. Fifteen US states, Canada and Uruguay are already there and Mexico, Israel and Luxembourg are very close. And cannabis looks set to be legalised at the federal level in the US thanks to Biden’s election.

We need to see the same here in SA.

It’s Time to Legalise Cannabis in SA.

The war on drugs – really a war on people – has failed. Governments around the world are moving towards legalising and regulating cannabis. Fifteen US states, Canada and Uruguay are already there and Mexico, Israel and Luxembourg are very close. And cannabis looks set to be legalised at the federal level in the US thanks to Biden’s election.

We need to see the same here in SA.

The Greens will soon introduce a bill into the SA Parliament that would legalise cannabis and see it regulated like alcohol or tobacco with users able to buy it from a store instead of the black market. Legalising cannabis would allow for the sale of cannabis to be taxed meaning that hundreds of millions of dollars could be diverted to our health system, including to drug rehabilitation and harm reduction.

Because people are going to use cannabis no matter what. Legalising cannabis would protect users by introducing standards for growing and selling cannabis and it would shift profits away from organised crime and into much-needed social services while creating jobs.

So let’s do this. But first, we need to make sure the Government and the Labor Opposition know that community support is there to Just Legalise It!

Around the world, governments are moving towards legalising and regulating cannabis.
 
Many US states have legalised either recreational or medical cannabis and the Democrats are now moving to legalise it at a federal level this year. 
 
It’s legal in Uruguay and Canada, while Mexico, Israel and Luxembourg are all planning to legalise it in the near future. And here in Australia, Canberra passed decriminalisation laws in 2019 allowing people over the age of 18 to possess up to 50 grams of marijuana. 
 
It’s time for reform in SA. I’m calling on you to support the Greens’ Legalise Cannabis Bill.
 
The legalisation and regulation of cannabis would reduce the harms associated with cannabis use by creating standards for growing and producing cannabis, while ensuring money is diverted to social services, including public education and promoting responsible use. It would also restrict access to those under 18 and divert funds from the black market to much-needed social services. 
 
Prohibition has been an abject failure with thousands of people ending up in the criminal justice system for simply choosing to use a drug of very little harm to themselves or others. 
 
“Just Say No” has never worked, with one in three Australians having tried cannabis in their lifetime. This has created a massive black market upon which organised crime has flourished.
 
Enough is enough. It’s time to Just Legalise It here in SA.
